The Best Way To Start Writing Is Easier Than You Think
There are many ways to get started writing, but there’s likely one you might not even realize that you do every day.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — Lao Tzu
The Problem
You struggle to come up with ideas on what to write, you sit at your computer staring at a blank screen.
You search endlessly across Google for ways to get started writing, but all the answers say the same thing but are worded differently.
You get frustrated at yourself because nothing is clicking.
A Potential Solution
Consume quality content daily for 30 minutes to an hour, but jot down or take mental notes on what you’re consuming.
Hear me out…
Quality content could mean many different things. For instance, you could read about your favorite subjects. Read about subjects you are interested in but not as familiar with. Watch documentaries. Read articles on Medium.
Content consumption looks different for everyone, but it’s important that you’re actively consuming versus passively consuming. What does this mean?
Actively think about how the content makes you feel instead of vegging out.
How does that article on Medium make you feel? Do you feel angry about what you read? Did the documentary you watch make you feel a certain way or inspire you to act? Take note of what you feel and why you feel a certain way as you consume content.
When you start to actively consume content regularly, ideas begin to flow. Perhaps not immediately, but over time you start to gather your own opinions on said content.
Take note of those opinions. Those opinions could be great starting points for a blog post, article, or whatever it is you’re trying to write.
Actually Getting Started
When it comes to actually putting pen to paper, take the physical or mental notes you gained from actively consuming content and do a brain dump on Apple Notes, or however you take notes, but don’t hold anything back.
Write down every single idea that comes to mind. You can filter out bad ideas later, but ideally, through this process, you now have a few good starting points to begin developing your next great written masterpiece.
